Following these guidelines will help make this the best resource for heavy equipment on the net. Thanks for joining us and I hope you enjoy your stay!! Welcome to HeavyEquipmentForums. I ran across this D-7 Cat locally today. It has a 4 cylinder D engine and a power shift transmission. The dozer is tight and in very good shape. It has been on light farm duty since the early 80's.
This machine is a little bit bigger than what I have been looking for, but the price and being local has made it an option. I only need it for heavy pushing and I have a lot of it to do.
I have been told they have put 2 different power shift transmissions in the D-7's and I'm assuming this would be an early one. Would this be a good machine, heavy pushing and slopes? Is it an E or F model? There is another post in the 'dozer' form titled D7F. Good read on those machines. Get the folks here a serial and they will give some advice regarding your machine. I was unable to find what I think to be a good serial number, but what I did find on a tag on the bottom of the dash was with the letter E under it On the hydraulic tank there was a tag that had a 43H48A1 and the very back of the tractor left hand side there was stamped numbers 48A By calling a friend at a CAT dealership he went into the legacy numbers and determined that it was a with a 4 cylinder D and a powershift transmission part number 2SThe Caterpillar D9 is a large track-type tractor designed and manufactured by Caterpillar Inc.
It is usually sold as a bulldozer equipped with a detachable large blade and a rear ripper attachment. The size, durability, reliability, and low operating costs have made the D9 one of the most popular large track-type tractors in the world.
The D9 is a series of heavy tracked-type tractors, carried on continuous tracks and usually used as bulldozers. The series began in with a prototype tractor called the D9X. Ten D9X prototype models were built in The D9 came equipped with a 1, cid D which powered the D9 right up until the introduction of the D9L.
Over its year life the D9G became the main crawler on many job sites, testifying to its sturdiness and design.
InWest Coast businessman Buster Peterson hooked up a pair of D9Gs to pushload the largest wheel tractor scrapers built. The D9H is still the most powerful conventional track-type tractor in company history. The unit featured the same new type of elevated drive sprocket undercarriage as had been introduced on the larger D10 in The elevated-drive-sprocket undercarriage is a modular design.
To repair the machines one breaks down the tracks and pulls the drive sprockets out. As a result, one can pull the powershift transmission out the rear. InCaterpillar produced their 25,th elevated-drive-sprocket track-type tractor, a D9N.
The L, N, R and T models of the D9 are visually very similar, differing primarily in the design of their internal systems. The D9R has clutch and brake steering, while the D9T has differential steering. The D9's primary working tools are the blade, affixed to the front and controlled by four hydraulic cylinders, and an optional ripperwhich can be attached to the back. The blade is mainly intended for earthmoving and bulk material handling: pushing up sand, dirt, and rubble.
It also can be used to push other heavy equipment such as earthmoving scraper pans, and in military applications, main battle tanks. The dozer blade usually comes in three variants:. Like many other bulldozers, the D9 can be fitted with other devices such as mine plows.

The rear ripper is intended for use in loosening rocky ground and ripping out larger stones. It can also break frozen ground and excavate small ditches. The ripper can be replaced with a multi-shank ripper, allowing the bulldozer to comb the ground. The size, power and weight of the larger track-type tractors dictate that they are used primarily for major projects. We have a large inventory of diesel engine parts in stock.

You need to tow something these engines have got you covered. It is a favorite of fleet managers because they run forever, have great torque to power ratio and can actually be rebuilt right in the frame of the truck. Number 5 seems fitting for the best diesel engine for the sheer number of units currently still on the road. Ford adopted the Powerstroke officially in but was unofficially in production starting in The predecessors were bigger 6 cylinders however an International bean counter decided it would be a grand idea to chop off 2 of the cylinders producing a 4 cylinder engine.
Best diesel engine? I think not. Why We Like It: Ruff! Mack has always been known as a slow and steady workhorse. It produced its first hook and ladder fire engine inproduced over 6, trucks for the US and British Military during WWI and helped build the Hoover Dam in These are the engines that built America.
The Mack E-7 was first produced in and lasted until the early 21st century. They are extremely simple to overhaul and rebuild and do exactly what you need for them. Good on ya Mack! That and there only like 5 models. It is amazing how many people bleed yellow and rightfully so in most cases. There have been some catastrophic failures in the Caterpillar line of engines; the E is not one of them. This was a very successful engine for CAT as it was really the first evolved electronic engine that was done right.
This was such a great engine that the vast majority of Peterbuilt trucks in the mid 90s and 00s all had Caterpillar E engines in them. The ECM design was easy to work with and bread a following of programmers that were able to write a variety of software for the engine. Even in the CAT E is still in millions of on-road and off-road applications across the world.
Overall Caterpillar is the unofficial king of diesel engines and it deserves its place as number 3 on the best diesel engine list. It is extremely hard to time the fuel system and like the VW on the automotive side, working on the CAT requires special tooling you can only buy from Caterpillar.
The CAT was engineered to be disposable. Albeit the was used in a wide variety of application including many marine applications the CAT and later the CAT C7 were arguably better models. Why We Love It: How could you not immediately fall in love with this engine from the name alone?
